Needles in valleys and gutters
Deciduous regions get one leaf drop a year. The Puget Sound’s firs and cedars shed continuously, hardest in late fall — and needles do something leaves do not: they mat into a dense felt that holds water instead of merely blocking it, in the two places a roof can least afford it.
A valley is a drain, until it is a sponge
A valley is designed to move the water of two slopes at speed. A needle mat turns it into a slow, permanently damp channel: the shingles under it stay wet for weeks after each rain, moss establishes along its edges, and the valley metal — where there is metal — corrodes years ahead of schedule. Under heavy canopy, valley condition is the single most reliable predictor of how a roof is really doing, and it is invisible from the ground once the mat settles in.
Gutters fail differently but end the same way: a needle-packed gutter overflows at the eave, and the overflow runs down fascia and against the very edge of the roof deck the gutter exists to protect. The stain on the fascia board is usually the first visible sign — and by then the wetting has been happening every rain for a season.
The rhythm that prevents it
Under conifers, once-a-year gutter cleaning is a deciduous habit applied to the wrong forest. The practical rhythm is valleys and gutters cleared after the main late-fall drop and checked again mid-winter — the mat rebuilds in months, not years. On a roof being evaluated for replacement, ask specifically what the valleys look like under the debris: on Sound-area housing they have often carried loads for decades, and valley metal is one of the most frequent surprise lines in a quote.
